Hamarikyu Garden
One of Tokyo's most attractive landscaped gardens, Hamarikyu Garden was constructed in the Edo period as part of the Tokugawa Shogun residence. Encompassing former duck hunting grounds, ponds, wooded areas and a traditional tea house, it is well worth a visit and just opposite the Conrad Tokyo.

Tsukiji Central Wholesale Market
A vast fish market in the centre of Tokyo and a major Tokyo attraction, selling every conceivable type of fish. As well as fishmongers there are stalls selling seaweed, pickles and kitchenware together with sushi shops. Closed on Sundays and holidays. Tsukiji Market is within walking distance of the Conrad Tokyo hotel.

Shiodome Shiosite
Home to the Conrad Tokyo, Shiodome Shiosite is a multi-use complex, a veritable city within a city, with offices, theatres, shops, museums and restaurants; in fact, everything one would need to live, work and play. The newest addition to the Shiodome Shiosite is the Conrad Tokyo.

Imperial Palace
In the centre of Tokyo, the Imperial Palace is home to the Emperor of Japan and is the site of the old Edo Castle, with impressive remaining gates, large stone walls and moats. The palace is not open to the public, but the East Garden is definitely worth a visit and the main entrance is via the Oteman Gate. The Imperial Palace is a five- to ten-minute walk from Tokyo Station.

Roppongi Hills
A stunning-looking development in Rappongi, now a Tokyo landmark, with private residences, offices, cinemas, shops and restaurants. The closest subway station is Roppongi Station on the Oedo and Hibiya Line.

Ryogoku
This is the centre of sumo in Tokyo, with a sumo stadium, sumo stables where the sumo wrestlers live and restaurants selling chanko, a stew eaten by the wrestlers. The stadium seats over 10,000 and hosts three of the six annual sumo tournaments, held in January, May and September. Located next to Ryogoku Station.

Oedo Onsen Monogatari
A hot springs spa complex, with areas that replicate the Edo period (1603-1868). With over 20 different types of indoor and open-air baths, the spa also has a selection of salons, restaurants, shops and relaxation areas. Just a few minutes from the Telecom Centre Station on the Yurikamome Line.

Meiji Shrine (Meiji Jingu)
A shrine dedicated to the souls of Emperor Meiji and his consort Empress Shoken. In Shinto, it is not uncommon to enshrine the deified spirits of important personalities. The approach to Meiji Shrine starts a few steps from Harajuku Station on the JR Yamanote Line or Meiji-jingu-mae Station on the subway Chiyoda Line.

Kabuki-za Theatre
A kabuki performance is a unique theatrical experience combining high drama with beautiful costumes and stunning stage sets. The Kabuki-za Theatre is located in Ginza, with matinees and evening performances held on most days of the year. English-language earphones are available for a small fee.
